History of the F&O Ban List

When choosing a stock to trade, we look at several factors to improve our probability of making a profit — volume, price movement, and how the stock has moved over the past year, month, or day, among others. But we also need to know the stock's margin requirements, and one factor that has a major bearing on this is the F&O ban list.

When a stock enters the F&O ban, it can mean lower returns, lower premiums, restrictions on new positions, and higher margin requirements. That's why it's important to track a stock's F&O ban history — to understand why and how it was affected, and plan your trades accordingly.

In this section, you can check the past F&O ban history of any stock on the list. Simply click on the stock you want to analyze, and the chart below will show how it has moved in and out of the ban over time.

The chart plots delta-adjusted and raw OI (ROOI) data — as per SEBI norms, delta-adjusted open interest is the key parameter used to determine whether a stock enters the F&O ban. Two reference lines mark 80% and 95%: once a stock crosses 95%, it enters the ban; it exits only after falling back below 80%.

You can also see how long a stock has stayed in the ban historically. This can help you spot patterns and time your trades — whether that means avoiding a stock nearing ban, or watching for opportunities as it approaches exit.

How Does This F&O Ban List Page Work?

NSE uploads the MWPL sheet each day, which is updated with information on the MWPL limit and the stocks that are currently in the F&O ban. We use this data along with historical data to calculate and track how the entire system works and which stocks are currently in the F&O ban.

Throughout this sheet, you can see all the stocks, their movements, and their respective MWPL positions. You can simply search for any stock to find out when it was previously in the F&O ban, how its position is changing currently, and which stocks have recently entered the ban.

All of this information is available in this particular sheet.

Here, it is important to check the MWPL limit based on delta-adjusted open interest, as this is the ultimate measure used by the exchange to determine whether a stock should enter the F&O ban, remain outside the ban, or exit the ban.

FAQs

What does "F&O Ban List" mean?

When a stock's trading position crosses 95% of the MWPL (Market-Wide Position Limit), it enters the ban period. If the future-equivalent open interest in that stock exceeds the 95% MWPL limit, the stock is placed under the F&O ban, which is reflected in the ban list.

To come out of the ban period, the stock's future-equivalent open interest must fall below 80% of the MWPL. Once it drops below this level, traders are again allowed to create new positions in that stock.

How often is this data updated?

The sheet is usually updated once every day, as per the NSE. Even if you can estimate that a stock is likely to come out of the ban the next day, you still need to wait for the end-of-day (EOD) file released by the NSE for confirmation.

What is the difference between Futures OI and Future-Equivalent OI?

Current MWPL (Futures) uses only the raw futures open interest — no delta adjustment. Current MWPL (Futures + Options) includes options open interest too, first delta-adjusted and converted into its futures-equivalent open interest before being added.

How much time does a stock take to come out of the ban?
There is no fixed time limit. A stock leaves the ban only when its future-equivalent open interest falls below 80% of the MWPL — traders can then create new F&O positions again.
Can I see a stock's full history?
Yes — click any symbol in the table, or search for it in the "MWPL % Over Time" chart, to see its MWPL% across every archived trading day.
